MIC LICKSO bump BEAUTY Dry, itchy skin during pregnancy? Here’s how to keep it glowing this spring - and beyond! BY LEILA PETERSEN “Y pring is on its way, but . if your skin still feels like it’s stuck in winter, you’re not alone. Pregnancy can amplify dryness and itchiness, especially after the colder months. Hormonal changes, cooler weather and rapid physical transformation can all make your skin feel uncomfortable just when you want to feel your best. The good news? With the right care, you can restore your glow. To help you get your skin summer-ready this spring, we spoke to Dr Kiasha Govender, a specialist dermatologist based in Durban, to find out how to keep your skin smooth and soothed and as your body changes. What’s with the itch? “During pregnancy, the body undergoes a complex cascade of hormonal changes, particularly an increase in oestrogen and progesterone, which can affect how the skin retains moisture,” explains Dr Govender. “These hormonal fluctuations can slow down sebum production, leaving the skin feeling drier and more prone to irritation.” Combine that with dry indoor heating and cold outdoor air, and it’s no surprise that pregnant skin can feel tight, flaky or persistently itchy, especially where it’s stretching the most.
