Nel cs are discovering how the world works and they are loving it! I is an exciting time when your baby starts crawling. They Their new adventures could, however, result in injuries, so it is important to ensure the environment they are in is safe for them to navigate and to seek medical advice if they are injured. “You can install safety gates and baby-proof your home,” says Dr Sheethal Ramsunder, a paediatrician based in Pretoria. “Itis also important to supervise all young babies at all times and keep them away from heights. Do not allow babies to climb up or over furniture unsupervised, and monitor their interaction with older children who have not yet learnt how to be gentle with little ones.” Follow Dr Ramsunder’s advice for a safer environment for your little one, and note the signs of a more serious injury that needs medical care. TREATING MINOR 4 SCRAPES AND CUTS Minor injuries are inevitable and they are easy enough to deal with at home, with the right know-how and equipment. “Clean and disinfect the wound, keep it clean and dry, and usea plaster or bandage. If the wound is deep or continues to bleed, apply pressure and take the child to the nearest doctor,” says Dr Ramsunder. BEWARE OF BURNS “The most important thing to do is secure all sources of heat from curious little hands, especially in the crawling infant and toddler stage. Heaters or kettles should not be at a level that a small child can reach, or have barriers around them so they cannot get close,” says Dr Ramsunder. She highlights hot irons, hair straighteners or other heated styling tools and any appliances that use heat to work as potential causes for concern. “This includes the cords that attach to them - your little one could easily pull on the cord and have the appliance fall onto them,” she warns. “The most important thing to do is secure all sources of heat from curious little hands, especially in the crawling infant and toddler stage.” wv
