“+ BETTER MATERNITY WHY THE SUDDEN ™ CRAVINGS & HUNGER? ) If you're expecting and suddenly find yourself yearning for - pickles, chocolate, or other unexpected foods, you aren't \ alone! In fact, research* shows nearly 57% of pregnant women experience food cravings, with meat and fruit topping the list. Other common cravings include: ‘ ; » Sugary treats Zz f » Dairy Starchy carbohydrates « Certain vegetables « Fast food > * EF Appetite also naturally fluctuates throughout xt ~4 pregnancy, says Lila Bruk, a registered dietitian from Lila Bruk & Associates in Johannesburg. For instance, in the first trimester, morning sickness can make it tough to eat enough, let alone a variety of foods, she says. However, as nausea eases in the second trimester, appetite often surges as the body requires extra energy to support a growing baby, Lila adds. “And in the third trimester, the baby’s size puts pressure on the stomach, leading to heartburn and a reduced appetite,” she says. During phases of lowered appetite, Lila recommends eating small, frequent meals with more palatable foods. “It’s easy to lean on carbs, but getting enough protein, healthy fats, and nutrients from all food groups is key,” she says. If large portions of protein seem unappealing, try smaller, easier-to-eat options, like chicken stir-fry instead of a whole breast. “Eggs, dairy, and legumes are also great protein sources that may feel more manageable,” she adds. “And when hunger spikes in the second trimester, embrace it with nourishing, balanced meals.”
