“ BETTER CHILD WEIGHT AND HEIGHT Between the ages of five and six, children typically gain around 2 to 3 kg and grow around 6 cm in height. Growth spurts are common and can lead to increased hunger. Pants that fit last month may suddenly resemble capris, and shoes may feel snug seemingly overnight. READING AND WRITING At five, many kids begin to crack the code of reading. They start understanding simple words and may even read short sentences. By six, your child has a vocabulary of around 10 000 words - a massive jump from the 1 000 words they typically know by age three. They might be breezing through early reader books and sounding out new words with pride. MATH STARTS MAKING SENSE (SORT OF) Numbers suddenly become more than just a fun chant. Your child will begin to count beyond 20, recognise patterns, and solve simple addition and subtraction problems. They might even start trying to tell time. Money becomes fascinating, and your child may start to learn the basics of coins, counting change, and - most importantly - how to persuade you to buy things. THE EXPLOSION OF CREATIVITY Five- to six-year-olds are little artists in the making. Their drawings start having real form - houses have doors and windows, and their colouring stays (mostly) inside the lines. Expect lots of imaginative play and elaborate pretend worlds. SOCIAL SKILLS At this stage, friendships deepen, and children begin understanding cooperation, turn-taking, and basic conflict resolution. Empathy continues to grow. They may comfort a crying friend or share their snack with a sibling (a rare but beautiful moment).
