SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL) SOFTWARE Emotional intelligence is just as important as academic smarts. Look for programmes that use interactive stories to explore emotions and relationships, provide virtual scenarios for problem-solving social situations, teach mindfulness and relaxation techniques and encourage empathy and understanding of others. TABLETS VERSUS TRADITIONAL TOYS Now, we know what some of you might be thinking: “But what about good old- fashioned toys? Are we raising a generation of screen zombies?” As always, the key is finding a balance and using technology intentionally to enhance and extend learning, not to replace traditional play. THE DARK SIDE OF ED-TECH: WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR While educational technology can be beneficial, it’s not all rainbow unicorns and dancing alphabets. Here are five pitfalls to avoid: 1. The “Educational” Label Trap: Not everything labelled “educational” is actually beneficial. Do your research. 2. The Addiction Factor: Some apps are designed to be addictive. Set clear limits and expectations. 3. The Data Privacy Concern: Be aware of what information apps are collecting about your child. 4. The Comparison Game: Every child learns differently. Don't stress if your children aren't progressing as fast as their friends in Math Blaster 3000. 5. Limited Social Interaction: Make sure your child still has plenty of face- to-face social activities to develop important interpersonal skills. ED-TECH AS A TOOL, NOT A TEACHER Technology is a tool, not a teacher. At the end of the day, the most important educational tool isn’t found in any app store - it’s you. Your love, attention, and engagement are what will truly help your child thrive in this brave new digital world. »
