© BETTER LIFE “Do all children need some form of therapy?” We asked Jayde Green, Counselling Psychologist who has a child and adolescent focused practice in Westville, Durban. She sees children for therapy from around the age of 2.5 to 3 years until the end of adolescence. “There has always been a need for therapy for young people. Widely accepted and accessible as it is now, many generations didn’t get to engage in therapy even though it was much needed. In saying that, we also live in a society that is highly technologically advanced which poses many issues. Crime in South Africa presents a threat to children not only because of the trauma associated with these acts but also because many children are limited in their abilities to go outdoors and play freely when compared to older generations making technology and media even easier to engage with.” MEDIA AWARENESS “The easy access to technology and media increases children's access to information that is not age-appropriate which can traumatize children and also cause anxiety. As a society as a whole, | feel there is a lot of anxiety at the moment such as the cost of living and safety issues. Children will feel and feed off adult anxieties,” comments Jayde. SIGNS TO WATCH OUT FOR: » When children start to act out of their normal behaviour « Regressing in their skills » Withdraw from people, places or activities that they normally enjoy. Circumstances that may further affect children: » A traumatic event or a big life change (such as moving home or school, divorce) » Addition of a family member » A serious illness or a death in the family
