“> BETTER MATERNITY So, she did a pregnancy test. “This time it was positive,” she remembers. “I couldn't believe it. | was in a complete daze during the party.” The first trimester of your pregnancy spans from conception to about 12 weeks and involves all kinds of changes, both physical and emotional. The earliest sign of pregnancy, as Helen discovered, is a missed period. But there are many others. MORNING SICKNESS AND FOOD CRAVINGS Many women experience nausea, often accompanied by vomiting, particularly in the morning. However, this can occur at any time of the day and can vary in severity from person to person. A good way to keep the nausea at bay is to snack throughout the day on something plain, such as crackers. Thankfully, with both of her pregnancies, Helen never experienced morning sickness. “I was one of the lucky ones,” she says. In addition to nausea, your eating habits may change. Your sense of taste and smell may become heightened, leading to cravings for certain foods and aversions to others. FATIGUE Hormonal changes and increased metabolic demands can lead to feelings of fatigue during the first trimester. “At around eight weeks, | felt extremely tired,” Helen recalls. If you can, take a nap in the afternoon. Also, try to keep up with your exercise regime, even if it means going for a stroll instead of a run. BREAST CHANGES Your breasts may become tender, swollen or sore. Your nipples may darken in colour and become more prominent. You may even find you go up a bra size. If your normal bra becomes uncomfortable, try reverting to a sports bra or wear looser clothes to feel more comfortable. Massaging your breasts may also help.
