BETTER LIFE torn, then surgery may be needed to repair them. You should, however, consult a doctor if the affected joint can’t move or becomes numb and if you experience excessive pain, swelling or bruising. Depending on the severity of the sprain, it can take from three weeks to several months to heal completely. Physiotherapy with strengthening exercises is also advised to strengthen the joint to minimise your risk of a future sprain. If you break a bone, you could hear or feel a snap or grinding sound as the injury happens. The area will be painful and become swollen and bruised. It will be tender to the touch, and you won't be able to put weight on the area. Depending where the break is, you'll need a splint, brace, cast or sling to stabilize the bones so they can heal again. In some cases, surgery may be needed to align the bones to enable them to heal. The precise treatment depends on the location and severity of the break and will be determined by the doctor. Most immediately, stop any bleeding by applying pressure to the wound with a clean cloth. Keep the injured area still and don’t try to align any bones even if there is bone sticking out. Apply ice packs to reduce swelling and pain and calm the person as they could be in shock. Then get them to the nearest medical facility or doctor for treatment. An X-ray will likely be taken to determine the exact location and severity of the break. If the bones did not move out of alignment, a splint or cast will be used for three to eight weeks. Severe breaks could need the bones to be aligned by a doctor. The patient will be given a local or general anaesthetic so the doctor can physically push the bones back into alignment, before adding a cast or splint to hold the broken bones in place. Healing can take a few months. +
